About Le Panier (2e)

Le Panier rises on a hill behind the old harbour, its interlacing pedestrian lanes opening onto squares like Place de Lenche. It is anchored by the 17th-century Vieille Charité (a Pierre Puget masterpiece now housing museums) and sits a short walk from the Cathédrale La Major and the waterfront MuCEM, making it the cultural and tourist heart of the city. Once a tight working-class district, it has gentrified into a creative enclave of soap-makers, ceramicists and small bistros, while keeping its laundry-lined, mural-covered character. Investors prize it for walkability and short-let tourist demand; residents accept stairs and no parking in exchange for atmosphere and a central location steps from Joliette and the Vieux-Port.
