Riedenburg

Riedenburg is the address of choice for Salzburg's establishment families, an enclave of stately Historicist villas and manicured gardens spread along the wooded slopes of the Rainberg and Mönchsberg just southwest of the historic centre. Much of the district was laid out after land was sold off in 1880, and the result is a remarkably green, low-rise quarter of grand Wilhelminian-era houses interspersed with architecturally striking modern homes. Around 7,000 people live here, drawn by the rare combination of leafy calm and a walk-in distance to the Altstadt that lets residents enjoy the city's culture without its crowds. The heart of the neighbourhood is Schloss Leopoldskron and its mirror-still lake, a Rococo palace familiar to film fans, beside which the Leopoldskron open-air pool and the centuries-old Almkanal canal path provide summer swimming and year-round walking and cycling. Trails climb the Mönchsberg directly into the old town, and the university campuses are close at hand. With detached villas and garden apartments in genuinely short supply, Riedenburg trades less on rental yield than on lifestyle and capital preservation: it is, quite simply, where many Salzburgers most want to live.
