Fira sits high on the caldera rim as the administrative and commercial capital of Santorini, linked to the Old Port below by cable car, mule path and switchback road. It concentrates the island's essentials, hospital, secondary schools, the central KTEL bus station, banks and the main shopping streets, alongside caldera-edge cafés, bars and the well-regarded Selene restaurant in a converted 18th-century monastery. Property here is a mix of caldera-view apartments, mixed-use buildings and restored townhouses; prices are lower than Oia or Imerovigli, and the year-round population makes long-term rental viable. It is the most practical place to actually live on Santorini, though it remains busy and tourist-heavy in season.
