Westend

Westend is the address Frankfurt's establishment aspires to. Tree-lined boulevards such as Bockenheimer Landstrasse and Zeppelinallee are flanked by ornate Gruenderzeit villas and discreet modern penthouses, many home to consulates, law firms and finance executives who want to walk to the banking towers but live somewhere green. Split into Westend-Nord and the slightly pricier, more central Westend-Sued, the district radiates quiet affluence rather than flash, with manicured front gardens, gallery-quality boutiques and some of the city's most expensive square-metre prices. The defining feature is space and greenery in a city that has little of either. The Palmengarten botanical garden and the adjoining 29-hectare Grueneburgpark form a vast green lung, while Goethe University's elegant Campus Westend brings a measured intellectual buzz and a steady stream of students and academics. Dining leans upscale and international, from the haute cuisine of Villa Merton to Viennese coffee at Cafe Siesmayer. It is unashamedly a district for the established rather than the up-and-coming.
